Kyocera introduced the Ecosys cartridge-free laser printer concept in 1992 as a means of improving our printers 'Total Cost of Ownership' (TCO) while reducing the printer's environmental impact. The Ecosys printer concept represents a fundamental improvement over conventional laser printer technology.
Ecology is Economy Ecosys: a new standard for printers based on the ecology-is-economy concept. Does action to protect the environment in the creation of a page printer place an extra financial burden on the user? Kyocera believes the answer is 'no'. We hold that an environment-friendly printer with a long service life offers true economic advantages. This is the thinking behind our Ecosys printers. They key to realising the Ecosys ideal is cartridge-free technology: An Ecosys printer employs a drum coated with amorphous silicon. This material is so costly that it was not previously used in the average printer. However, it provides 30 times the durability of conventional drums and more-or-less eliminates the need for drum replacement. As a result, the expense caused from conventional cartridge replacement is avoided. Ecosys technology also promotes recycling since the superior hardness of amorphous silicon enables the use of recycled paper, which tends to damage conventional drums. With their minimal use of consumable items, longer service lives, and contribution to recycling, Ecosys printers offer ecological and economic advantages. Ecosys: It's a whole new approach to printing. Ecosys Benefits The benefits of Kyocera Mita's cartridge-free Ecosys technology are twofold. Ecologically, it can help eliminate the global environmental burden of an estimated 50 million used print cartridges that are now disposed of each year. Economically, by eliminating the recurring costs associated with replacement print cartridges. Ecosys printers provide the industry's lowest TCO - less than one cent per page in most cases. These incremental savings can recoup the printers purchase price in a year or less, particularly in network printing environments.
